The Vedas are the four holiest books of the by mankind to the next, perhaps over thousands of years.. Each book has four major kinds of text – the Samhitas (mantras and benedictions), the Aranyakas (text on rituals, ceremonies, sacrifices and symbolic-sacrifices), the Brahmanas (commentaries on rituals, ceremonies and sacrifices), and the Upanishads (texts discussing meditation, philosophy. The word Veda means “knowledge” and the four Vedas are believed to contain the essential knowledge of the universe and how an individual is to live in it. The term Upanishads means to “sit down closely” as if drawing near to listen to some important instruction. The Vedas provide the broad strokes of how the universe works and how one is to respond; the Upanishads then give instruction.
You can't just read the Vedas and think it'll work. The 4 Vedas are called shruti for a reason. You have to hear them. Like in a yajna to control nature's elements you have to pronounce the mantras exactly correct, and that you can only do by lear. This is quite a good book, as far as it goes. Readers who would like to find a far fuller selection taken from the entire corpus of the Vedas, one that carries us beyond the merely scholarly into an approach which sees the Vedas as a revelation of our shared humanity, as "a disclosure of something that enriches the human experience," might care to take a look at Raimundo Panikkar's magisterial.
